This is an ORIGINAL
MOUNTED or CAVALRY
M1914 Cartridge Belt as issued to cavalrymen who carried the M1903 Springfield Rifle and M1911 .45 Auto Pistol.  The belt is made of ALL-WOVEN WEB light olive drab shade #3 (aka "khaki") webbing, with strong original color and little wear to the metal parts.  The belt was made by the Mills Woven Cartridge Belt Company, which, along with Russell Manufacturing Co., seems to have been THE major producer of mounted belts, and is so stamped on the underside of the two innermost pocket flaps and again on the adjustment belt (see images below). Interestingly, Mills itself termed this belt the "Mills Infantry Belt (Mounted) Model of 1910" in its catalogs of the time (See image above of catalog page).
The pockets feature the post-1907 "puckered bottoms" which were introduced to prevent damage from the spitzer bullets of the .30-'06 cartridge.  All pieces are dated May 1918.  The belt is in VERY GOOD condition with just some soiling on the left front pocket flaps (See close-up image below).
Most unusually, the belt has been modified with the addition of a brass shield where the .45 magazine pouch would normally be placed on the mounted belt (which BTW does not prevent the placement of the .45 pouch on the belt) and two snap hooks have been riveted to either side of the second left hand pocket.
If anyone out there can shed some light on the purpose of such modifications, I would appreciate hearing from you.
